Hi, I'm Marqez.

Athletics kick-started the way I saw the world at five years old and eventually opened doors I could not have imagined. Curiosity kept me learning in every room I entered, while research and scholarship gave me new language and practical tools to understand those experiences.

Today, I bring those lessons into speaking, small-group conversations, and practical projects centered on self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, and career readiness.

My Story

From a small Texas town to the rooms that shaped me.

I grew up in Brenham, a rural Texas town, and began playing tackle football at five years old. Athletics eventually introduced me to coaches, boosters, donors, and university leaders, giving me early access to forms of social capital I did not yet have the language to recognize. That journey carried me to UT Austin and UC Berkeley as a student-athlete and now to Vanderbilt University as a doctoral student.

Curiosity kept me asking questions and learning from people whose experiences were different from mine. Those conversations expanded how I understood relationships, education, and opportunity. Research and scholarship later gave me the language and practical tools to make sense of what I was experiencing.

My work in higher education fundraising has reinforced those lessons by showing me how trust is built, how stories move people, and how relationships can create access to opportunity. I now bring those lessons into speaking, small-group conversations, and practical projects for students and athletes.

“Don't let schooling interfere with your education.” A quote commonly attributed to Mark Twain.

Formal education matters—and so does what we learn through relationships, observation, and lived experience. Staying curious, asking meaningful questions, and learning from perspectives different from my own have taught me more than any single classroom ever could.

From the field to the classroom, each room gave me something different to learn.

Competing at Texas, where athletics opened doors and introduced me to relationships and opportunities I was still learning how to recognize.

In 2019, I became one of only four Longhorns over the previous 20 seasons to record a sack, forced fumble, and fumble recovery in the same game.

Keynote Speaking

I speak to students, college athletes, educators, families, and institutional audiences about self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, career readiness, and the unwritten lessons surrounding education and opportunity.

My talks connect established ideas with lived experience to help people recognize their agency, relationships, and capacity for growth.

Small-Group Conversations

I lead honest, intentional conversations where students, athletes, and parents can examine identity, transitions, relationships, confidence, education, and life beyond athletics.

These are interactive, facilitated conversations—not counseling, therapy, or traditional workshops.

These conversations are educational and developmental and are not a substitute for licensed mental-health, legal, financial, medical, or athlete-representation services.

Ideas Into Practice

Translating research into practical conversations.

My doctoral studies at Vanderbilt, my professional work, and my lived experiences shape how I connect established research to everyday decisions. I approach this as a developing scholar-practitioner—linking scholarship, practice, and experience rather than claiming the last word on any of it.

S

Self-Efficacy

Building confidence in one’s ability to respond, act, and influence what happens next.

For an athlete, it looks like trusting you can adjust after a setback and shape what comes next.

E

Emotional Intelligence

Recognizing and managing emotions while understanding how they affect relationships and decisions.

It helps athletes handle pressure, feedback, and relationships on and off the field.

C

Career Readiness

Developing the skills, judgment, and confidence needed to navigate opportunities beyond athletics and school.

It prepares athletes for the transitions that arrive when the game ends.

Event + Response = Outcome · a model from Focus 3

A model I lean on in this work: we rarely control the event, but a more intentional response shapes the outcome.
